Eyes are windows to see the beauty of the world. Therefore, it is important to maintain their health. Even though you have tried to maintain good eye health, it could be, without realizing it, you are doing some trivial habits that can interfere with eye health.

Due to busy daily activities, we may often neglect to maintain eye health. To keep your eyes healthy, some habits need to be avoided, namely:

1. Spending a lot of time in front of the gadget screen

Many interactions with computer screens, tablets, or smartphones for a long time can cause eye fatigue and headaches. This happens because when looking at the gadget screen, the eye muscles will work extra.

In addition, blue light from your gadget screen can also cause macular degeneration in the retina of the eye, which if ignored, will lead to blindness.

Use the 20-20-20 formula when interacting with gadgets, which is every 20 minutes staring at the gadget screen, looking away 20 feet (6 meters), for 20 seconds. 2. Careless in Using Contact Lenses

Contact lens users require extra effort to care for their eyes than eyeglass users. Instead of improving appearance, the use of contact lenses that are not painstaking can cause irritation or eye infection, even blindness.

Some habits that need to be avoided in the use of contact lenses are:
  • Shower while wearing contact lenses
  • Sleeping with contact lenses still on
  • Clean contact lenses with plain water or saliva
  • Not keeping contact lenses in place
  • Use the contact lens case for more than 3 months

3. Don't Use Sunglasses Outdoors

Make sure to always use sunglasses that can protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays, when you are outside. Ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun can be harmful to eye health and can cause eye diseases, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or pterygium.

4. Forgot to remove make-up before going to bed

For women who often use make-up on the face, try to always clean it before going to bed. Please be aware that bits of mascara, eyeliner, or eye shadow can fall into your eyes and cause irritation or infection. That's why it's important to wash off your makeup before going to bed until it's completely clean.

5. Smoking

There is a lot of information that discusses the bad effects of smoking. And in fact, cigarettes do bring many diseases, including the eyes. People who smoke are more susceptible to blindness due to cataracts, macular degeneration, or damage to the optic nerve.

6. Don't Know Family Illness History

According to research, there are several eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, that run genetically in families. This eye disease can cause blindness. Therefore, you should be more vigilant if you have family members who suffer from the disease.

Through information about the history of the disease in the family, the ophthalmologist can more easily find out the cause of a person's complaint. That way, treatment can be carried out as early as possible.

7. Ignoring Routine Eye Check-ups

Checking with an eye doctor regularly every year is necessary to detect several serious diseases, such as glaucoma, eye disease due to diabetes (diabetic retinopathy), or macular degeneration early. This routine eye examination especially needs to be done when a person is at the age of 40 years and over.

8. Ignore Red Eye Symptoms

Symptoms of eye irritation in the form of red, watery, or burning eyes can indeed be caused by harmless conditions, such as allergies. But you need to be alert if complaints of eye infection appear, such as eye pain, a feeling of a lump in the eye, excessive glare at the light, and a thick white or greenish discharge from the eye.

It is very important to see an eye doctor if you have an eye infection because if left untreated, the infection can damage the eye and spread to other people.

9. Ignoring Eye Injuries

A person should be alert and have their eyes checked immediately if they have an injury to the eye area. This is especially true if the injury causes blurred vision, difficulty opening the eyes, blood spots appear on the whites of the eyes, can't move the eyeballs, or there is a discrepancy between the eyes.
